Image tools
Every image tool here decodes and re-encodes your file inside this browser tab, using the same codecs a browser already ships plus a few compiled to WebAssembly. Nothing is uploaded, so the size of your file is limited by your device's memory rather than by an upload quota.

Compressing versus converting
Compression adjusts quality within a format. Conversion changes the format: WebP or AVIF may produce a smaller photograph, while PNG is useful for lossless graphics. Compare the preview and actual file size before downloading.
The trade is compatibility. JPG and PNG open anywhere. WebP is safe on every current browser but still awkward in some desktop software, and AVIF is smaller again but slower to encode and younger in support. If the file is going into an email or a document, JPG is usually still the right answer.
What removing metadata does and does not do
Re-encoding removes camera metadata such as EXIF, XMP and IPTC. Quick compression can keep the original file when re-encoding would make it larger; in that case its metadata remains. Use the metadata removal tool when removal is required.
It does not remove anything visible in the picture itself. A street sign, a document on the desk, a reflection in a window — those survive, because they are pixels, not metadata.
Why a size target is a best effort
A photograph of foliage and a screenshot of a spreadsheet compress nothing alike. When you ask for a specific byte target, the tool searches quality settings and, if you allow it, dimensions — but it stops at a quality floor rather than producing something unusable, and says so when the target was not reachable.
