Remove image backgrounds locally
Cut the background out of a photo with a small model that runs on this device. Files stay on your device.
How this works locally
- You choose a file; the page reads it from your device.
- The matching engine is loaded from fileslimmer.com and runs in a Web Worker.
- The result is written back to a location you choose on this device.

Inspect the edge on more than one background
Simple artwork on a flat background can be separated by colour without downloading a model. Photographs use a model that runs locally on your device. The first photographic job therefore needs additional program files, but your image itself is never sent to a server.
Slide between the original and result, then inspect the transparent output on light, dark and checked backgrounds. Fine hair, glass, motion blur and objects with similar colours to their surroundings remain difficult. Download the transparent PNG only after checking the subject and any holes or thin lines.

Estimated memory
Your browser reports only a coarse memory hint, so this figure is an estimate.
| Device profile | Largest file | Largest image |
|---|---|---|
| Minimal | 40 MiB | 16 megapixels |
| Low | 75 MiB | 24 megapixels |
| Balanced | 150 MiB | 40 megapixels |
| High | 250 MiB | 60 megapixels |
Your browser is placed in one of these profiles from the coarse hints it exposes. A file above the limit is refused before it is read, rather than after the tab has run out of memory. On an iPhone or iPad a further ceiling applies whatever the profile — largest image: 16 megapixels — because mobile Safari reclaims a tab's memory far more abruptly than the hints can predict.
Limitations
- The matting model runs on your device and is downloaded once. Fine hair, motion blur, glass and reflective edges are where its cut-out is weakest.
- The segmentation model is downloaded from this domain once, on your first run, and then works offline. Nothing can be processed until that download has finished.
- Edges are softened by 2 pixels so the cut-out does not look stamped on. A subject with genuinely hard edges will read as slightly soft because of it.
